When you are travelling as a digital nomad and want to spend one or more months in a particular location, you certainly don’t want to waste days searching for accommodation that looks great in photos, but turns out to be completely different in reality – and far from ready to work apartment. You also don’t want to be scammed into paying in advance for accommodation that doesn’t even exist at the listed address.
The most affordable accommodation in Split is available from November 1st to April 1st. This is the off‑season period when many airlines reduce their flight schedules, fewer tourists visit, and many landlords are not operating at all. Accommodation is available in all areas, but prices can vary. However, it is likely that you will find a place at that time for about a quarter of the price compared to the peak summer season.
Where to search for an apartment ?
You can search on Google Maps by location, in the local classifieds (www.njuskalo.hr), in the classifieds of the most popular web portal in Croatia (https://www.index.hr/oglasi/ ) and, of course, on various platforms for short-term rentals, such as Airbnb and Booking.com, or on Facebook in specialized groups.
When you find a place, what will you look at first?
When you find photos of an apartment you like, check whether it appears on only one website or on several. If you can’t find it on multiple platforms, the accommodation probably doesn’t exist. It’s useful to run a Google image search — Google will show you if the same photos appear elsewhere, perhaps in another city or even on the other side of the world. If the images show up in different locations, it’s immediately suspicious and suggests that someone may have taken photos of another property and is presenting them as their own, meaning the accommodation is likely fake.

Find accommodation name – contact of the owner
Most landlords give their accommodation a title or name and advertise it that way. Search for that name on Google to find the landlord’s contact information. Find the phone number, send a message, and ask for an offer. Any serious landlord will offer a better price than one listed on online rental platforms. Landlords generally prefers not to have to pay platform fees and commissions, so the price they offer you should be more favourable.
Reservation agreed – is the accommodation reserved for me?
If you’ve arranged a reservation, check whether the dates you booked on the online platforms are blocked for other guests. If they are blocked, it’s most likely because of your reservation. You should verify this so you don’t arrive and find someone else staying in your accommodation.
This actually happened to me. I made a reservation a few months in advance. The landlord actually blocked the accommodation, but later forgot on it. The day before my arrival, when I called to confirm check-in time, the lady apologized and said she had forgotten and that the apartment had already been rented because the reservation had been made a long ago. I had to look for another place – and that was one day before travel.
Reviews – is it ready to work apartment ?
You can find reviews on Google and other rental platforms. Sometimes there are over 1000 of them and they won’t read them all. Who knows how many you have to go through before finding a description of potential problems. At the following link https://truestay.me/ enter URL that contains reviews and you will receive a short summary of all of them. Note that the link must contain only the reviews page, and is often available only in a mobile browser.
If you found the accommodation on Facebook
If the accommodation you found on Facebook does not exist anywhere else, that alone is warning to be cautious. This still doesn’t necessarily mean the accommodation is fake, but in Split and Croatia it is unlikely for a legitimate rental not to be advertised on any other platform. In that case, you should definitely request additional verification.
Additional checks
Arrange a video call from the accommodation with the landlord and make sure they send their current location beforehand. If the landlord cannot share their live location while at the property, ask them to start video call outside the building so the street name and house number are clearly visible.
Ask to go through all the rooms shown in the photos. If a room is locked or cannot be viewed for any reason, consider the possibility that part of the apartment may have been rented to someone else. The video should be slow and detailed, and you shouldn’t hesitate to request this.
At the end, ask to be shown the most recent utility bills. The bill must include the accommodation’s address. If you’re travelling in winter, ask to see a bill from the same month last year. Heating costs in April and November are not the same, so keep this in mind. In Croatia, common monthly bills include electricity, gas (if the apartment has gas), garbage collection, internet, and the TV licence fee. Ask what is included in the rental price and what you are expected to pay separately.
“Long story short, Apartment Nevena Split is available on several online platforms, but we prefer direct bookings. We can arrange a video call from the apartment before you book, and if you plan to stay longer, we can also show you recent utility bills.
