Let me explain what to look for in pictures, windows, location, furniture and reviews before booking Apartment in Split.
I was recently looking for an apartment for a short summer vacation on the islands of Croatia, and here’s what I looked for. I knew I wanted a great apartment and had a rough idea of how much I wanted to spend. I started researching and quickly came up with three key things: location, dates, and high guest reviews.
Multiple apartments, but the pictures are not related to the apartment names
I’ve seen that when there are multiple apartments, it’s often impossible to know which picture belongs to which apartment. You look at the most beautiful picture, with the most beautiful view, and you think you’ve booked that particular room, but it could be another one. There are usually no floor plans of the apartments anywhere, which makes it even more difficult to understand what the accommodation looks like.

Windows and doors
An apartment can look beautiful, but only have a balcony door with no real windows. In the pictures everything looks bright because the door is open, but when it’s closed, the space becomes as dark as a garage. You can’t air out an apartment like that in the morning because the only opening is where people pass by. Yes, people pass by in front of the door, and you definitely don’t want that.
Or, everything looks beautiful, but all the windows are skylights. I don’t like skylights because they can’t be opened when it rains, and they give the impression that the space has no windows at all. To me, they have a similar effect to a garage. They exist, but they don’t really exist.
Our apartment – there are separate windows and doors, each room has a door and window and a separate entrance to the apartment.

The toilet door is a sliding door or a folding door
Imagine sliding doors or accordion doors in the bathroom or toilet. Sliding doors are a slightly better partition that does not have sound or any other insulation. It is definitely not a door that provides the necessary privacy. It’s not a problem if you’re traveling alone, but if you’re in a group, you have a “4D” apartment – that is, an apartment with “special effects and smells”.
Apartment Nevena Split – our apartment is not a “4D” apartment, the bathroom has a real, normal door and its own window. Even while taking a shower you can look out at the greenery in front of the building.

How to identify old furniture
Old beds often have a railing at the bottom. Or you have a shelf unit where the bed is in the middle, and around and above it is a shelf that surrounds the bed. Everything can be neat and clean, but I personally can’t stand furniture from the 70s anymore. Maybe something else is important to you, like location, but old beds are often uncomfortable.
With us – the bed doesn’t have a bottom partition and all the furniture is new, and we think it is modern and stylish.
Bed, sofa and double bed
What if the bed isn’t a bed but a couch? If you like a hard surface to sleep on, this is definitely a plus. They probably didn’t put a thicker mattress topper on it that would make the couch a normal place to sleep. The couch is for sleeping on for a day or two, but not for comfortable sleeping.
You are looking for a double bed and it looks like this in the picture, however, if you look closely you can see that all the beds are joined together. This means that you will not have a hole in the middle.
Apartment Nevena Split – the bed is a double, 180cm wide, one large mattress, not two small ones.

Location – not everything that seems close is really close.
A location on a map can look very close, but be very far away. How is that possible? Here’s an example. I recently visited a famous place in Italy at the foot of the Alps. The location of the apartment looked fantastic, but the apartment was actually 900 m above sea level and accessible only by car, with no public transportation. Other users marked the location as excellent because everyone apparently went by car. There was only one comment in the reviews that said it was at the top of a hill and that you couldn’t get there without a car. It’s my fault for not reading all the comments. I thought a 10 for a location on Booking was enough of a sign. Instead of a leisurely walk, I could have hiked every day if the owner hadn’t been kind enough to drive us up and down twice a day.
Apartment Nevena Split – the apartment is on the first floor, exactly 27 steps, no elevator.

Bathroom – the pictures reveal everything
Bathroom pictures can reveal recent renovations. Old or modern tiles? Are the tiles shown at all or not? Are there cracks in the corners?
Apartment Nevena Split – as I already mentioned, everything is new.
Curtains and blackout for bedroom
Do you pay attention to whether the apartment has blinds or blackout curtains? If you want to get some sleep, will you be able to block out the light coming from the large window or will you wake up at 6 in the morning? I like that you can make the room dark even on the sunniest day outside.
Apartment Nevena Split – rooms have blackout curtains, you can also close the shutters.

Sounds and environment
Is the apartment above a café or restaurant so you will have to see off all their guests? Google Maps is a great help here. Look up the apartment address on Google Maps and see what’s around you. You can also check there if there is a shop nearby or how far away it is, if you think you might need it?
Apartment Nevena Split – both the kitchen and the rooms overlook the park, the walls have additional sound insulation. On the side of the kitchen is the main entrance to the building or the main road.
Mosquito nets – a small detail that means a lot
Apartment Nevena Split – the windows have mosquito nets that can be closed or opened.
FAQ – most frequently asked questions before booking an apartment
How to check if an apartment is well insulated? Look at reviews, pictures of windows, doors, and the surroundings. If it’s above a café, it will be visible in the comments.
How do you know if a bed is comfortable? Check the width, the mattress, and whether it’s a single double mattress or two pushed together.
What to look for in apartment pictures? Windows, doors, room layout, floor plan, bathroom and furniture.
