If you’re a digital nomad searching for a place that’s inspiring, calm, and effortlessly beautiful, Split should be at the top of your list. This Mediterranean gem is not only stunning — it’s also incredibly walkable, relaxed, and surprisingly peaceful outside the peak summer rush.
A Walkable City Full of History
One of the best things about Split is how easy it is to explore. You don’t need a car, complicated routes, or hours of planning. Everything is close, simple, and perfect for slow, sunny walks. Even the most iconic historical spots — like Diocletian’s Palace, Peristyle Square, Riva Promenade, and Marjan Hill — are easy to reach and enjoy without stress.
And the best part? Outside the summer season, there are no crowds. You can wander through 1,700‑year‑old stone streets at your own pace, grab a coffee in the palace, or watch the sunset from the waterfront — all in a calm, relaxed atmosphere that digital nomads love.
A Bit of Split’s Rich History
Split’s story began over 1,700 years ago when Roman Emperor Diocletian built his massive seaside palace. The structure was so impressive that the entire old town eventually grew inside and around it. Today, Diocletian’s Palace is the only Roman palace in the world still fully lived in, with cafés, shops, apartments, and even nightlife inside its ancient walls.
Peristyle is a public square today, but originally the Peristyle was the emperor’s private ceremonial courtyard, where he appeared as a “living god”. The red granite columns were imported from Egypt.
Not only Diocletian
In 1959, archaeologists discovered a water well in the palace basements — and it turned out to be older than the palace itself. This suggests that people lived on the site long before Diocletian chose it for his retirement villa. Some theories even hint at an earlier Greek settlement, though no definitive proof has been found
